Are you doing the most for yourself and your career? Watch the video for 4 ways to step up how you show up for yourself.
Have you ever found yourself feeling forgotten or overlooked, like no one is investing in coaching you and helping you build new skills, or like there isn't clear thought being put behind your career advancement and new opportunities for you?
I'm working with two clients at manager-level who feel this way - a bit neglected by their organisations and ready to leave and look for a more nurturing home elsewhere.
But before they leave, I'm challenging them with this question: have you done everything in your power to help yourself in this situation?
Have you directly asked for specific feedback to help you to grow?
Have you asked your manager specific, direct questions about what's next for you in your role and explicitly asked for their support to get there?
Have you looked for opportunities to step up in your role of your own accord?
Have you raised your hand to lead a new project that could stretch you and bring you greater visibility?
Have you looked for a learning programme that will help you build the skills that you want to develop next and then asked for your manager's support?
In short, are you leading yourself in your career or waiting for someone to lead you?
Self-leadership is a muscle you need to build if you want your career to start looking the way that you want it to.
Your life and career are your own. You belong to no one but yourself.
It is your responsibility - not your manager's - to make sure that you are growing, learning, and advancing. And it is your responsibility to leave an environment that is not supporting your growth, but only after you have done everything in your power to influence your desired outcome in your current situation.
Are you doing the most for yourself?
If you're a manager or leader and you want to lean in and step up more for yourself in your career, but need some help to think about how to, let's talk.
